German National Coach Hansi Flick Sacked After String of Disappointing Results

After the heavy 1-4 defeat against Japan yesterday, the head of national coach Hansi Flick was already on the chopping block in the German media.

Less than a day later, the German trainer is now effectively on the street. A fourth defeat in his last six games was ultimately the straw that broke the camel’s back.

In addition to Flick himself, assistants Marcus Sorg and Danny Röhl are also sidelined. Rudi Völler, former Genk coach Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner will take over temporarily for the practice match against vice world champions France.

“It has been decided within the DFB that the national team needs new impetus after the series of disappointing results,” said federation chairman Bernd Neuendorf.

“Ahead of next year’s European Championships, we need optimism and confidence. Sporting success is our top priority and that is why I have made this decision, one of the most difficult ever in my career. I really appreciate Hansi and his assistants, as people and as football experts.”

In the German media, Julian Nagelsmann, ex-coach of RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, is being put forward as the dream successor.
