Harry Maguire Opens Up About Difficult Situation and Failed Transfer in Latest Interview

Wants to fight for a place at United

English national defender Harry Maguire has only played 23 Premier League minutes in the current season; since the arrival of coach Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2022, the once most expensive defender in the world has only been the number four central defender at Manchester United. The 30-year-old’s contract with the “Red Devils” runs until 2025, and the right-footer has now spoken about his difficult situation and, for the first time, about a failed move in the summer.

“The first four weeks were tough,” said the defender, who was criticized by many in his home country, in the “Express“, who, despite his limited playing time at club level, was in the starting line-up in all ten of England’s international matches during the 2022/23 season and played 880 minutes. “I’ve thought about everything and I know that the moment I haven’t started a game in the first four games of the season, the story becomes clear to me. I want to play games, I want to play football.”

While things are going well for Maguire in the national team, he was a candidate for sale at Man United in the last summer transfer window. A move to West Ham United was on the cards for a long time, but reportedly failed due to a severance payment that the defender is said to have made a prerequisite for an early departure. The “Hammers” are said to have offered around 35 million euros; United had agreed to the transfer, it is said. When asked about this specifically, the professional said: “How should I put this? We just didn’t come to an agreement.”

According to the Times, Maguire earns around 12 million euros gross per season in Manchester, but he would have had to make losses in London. Despite his difficult sporting prospects given the competition in the form of Lisandro Martínez (25), Raphaël Varane (30) and Victor Lindelöf (28), Maguire was confident about the future.

At United, too, they were ultimately happy that he was staying, he said, “and I was happy to be able to continue fighting for my place. I want to do that and every time I train or play, I will give it my all.” After the recent win against Scotland, the English national coach Gareth Southgate defended and protected his protégé with clear words in the direction of all critics.
