HBO MAX Secures Streaming Rights to NBA Games: Expanding Access to World Basketball Competition

The NBA continues to expand its brand. For the first time in history, the ultimate competition in world basketball can be followed in streaming outside of its official channels.

HBO has bought the rights and will broadcast the NBA in streaming through HBO MAX. A strong bet from the American chain that will offer this service for free to all its subscribers.

The truth is that the platform will not broadcast the competition in its entirety. You can see 65 of the 1,230 matches in the regular phase. The new tournament will also be broadcast ‘In-Season‘, the all-star and the playoffs until Conference Finals.

Until now, the only way to watch the NBA in Spain was through Movistar Plus, which broadcasts a game on Sundays, the All-Star and all playoffs, or by purchasing the NBA ‘League Pass’. HBO joins the offer, being the first platform outside the league to broadcast the competition.

Strategy change

Warner Bros. Discovery, owner of HBO, is making significant changes to its sports content distribution strategy. They are launching an offer on October 5 that will provide subscribers access to the company’s entire live sports portfolio. This includes the MLB baseball, the NHL hockey, the MLS football, college basketball and the NBA.

The company aims to simplify the experience for consumers and linear distributors by consolidating its live sports content on its Max streaming platform. This move comes at a time when the media landscape is becoming increasingly complex.

Initially, this new sports tier will be offered as a free extended preview for Max subscribers in the USA. The free preview will last until February 29, 2024, allowing users to access live sports programming at no additional cost during this period.

Unlike some competitors that selectively distribute sports content across linear TV channels and streaming services, WBD plans to make all of its live sports content available on both linear channels and Max. This approach aims to cater to different consumer preferences and not diminish the linear viewing experience.
