the essential On the occasion of the fourteenth edition of the “Arnaud Varnat” baseball tournament, the Indians of Bon-Encontre celebrated the 30th anniversary of their club, one of the few in Lot-et-Garonne.
This weekend, the Indians Baseball-Softball Club of Bon-Encontre organized the 14th edition of the “Arnaud Varnat” baseball tournament. This tournament, in tribute to an Indians player who died in 1999, took place rue Pierre de Coubertin in Bon-Encontre. Symbolically, all the Indians players wear the number 13. 6 teams faced each other, first in the group stages then in the final stages: the Redwings of Rennes, the Blouges of Périgueux/Brive la Gaillarde, the Panthères of Pessac, the Stade Toulousain Baseball Tigers, the Old School Indians Team and the Bon-Encontre Indians. In total, a hundred players were present.
Between Saturday and Sunday, almost 11 matches were played. For the locals, who distinguished themselves brilliantly, it was a kind of recovery tournament. As a reminder, the Indians won R3 last year, the 3rd regional level of the New Aquitaine region, the defending champions having therefore validated their rise to R2 (Regional 2) at the same time.
Next season, the players are already preparing it. “We are going to enter the preparation phase, even if baseball is a sport whose championship starts at the end of February and ends at the end of June” continue the members of the Indians. The objective of the group, which mixes experience and youth, is to capitalize on the results of the previous sporting exercise. The locals are even ambitious. This rise to the next floor will also allow them to relaunch the baseball school, hitherto very successful, but losing momentum since 2017. “Currently, we are suffering in terms of training. But we want to relaunch this crucial aspect, especially since we are evolving on superb infrastructures with in particular two playing fields, one of which meets international standards and a more modest one which allows training or hosting youth competitions with, among other things, a hitting tunnel” continues President Audrey Calin.
This weekend has also, in addition to the “Arnaud Varnat” tournament, made it possible to celebrate the club’s 30th anniversary. As a reminder, the Indians were born in 1993 thanks to a handful of enthusiasts. It is now one of the only baseball clubs, which also hosts a softball team, in Lot-et-Garonne. Note their participation in the forum of associations of Bon-Encontre this Saturday, September 9.
Here are the results of the tournament: The Rennes Redwings finished 1st, The Indians finished 2nd, The Blouges de Périgueux/Brive la Gaillarde finished 3rd, the Panthères de Pessac finished 4th, the Old School Indians finished 5th and the Stade Toulousain Baseball Tigers finished 5th.
