Jérôme Boateng in Talks for Return to FC Bayern: Reports

Is central defender Jérôme Boateng about to return to FC Bayern? As several German media have now confirmed, the people of Munich are working on bringing the now 35-year-old back.

Boateng left Bayern for Olympique Lyon on a free transfer in September 2021 after ten years on the Isar. His contract there expired this summer and he has been without a club since then.

According to Sky, the negotiations are already advanced and the Bayern bosses definitely want to bring Boateng back. He is fit and ready for his comeback. Another meeting is planned for Sunday, but there is no date for a medical check yet. According to information from tz/Merkur, Boateng could possibly train at Säbener Straße on Sunday.

Sport1 has now also confirmed the report: A contract until January or the end of the season is being discussed. Boateng recently rejected an offer from Saudi Arabia and wanted to go to Bayern.

The reason for Boateng’s possible comeback in Munich is likely to be the personnel shortage in central defense: coach Thomas Tuchel only has Dayot Upamecano, Min-Jae Kim, the currently ailing Matthijs de Ligt and talented Tarek Buchmann available. In the first round of the DFB Cup, Bayern played against Preußen Münster on Tuesday with Leon Goretzka and Noussair Mazraoui in the central defense.

Boateng moved from Manchester City to Bayern in 2011 for 13.5 million euros. There he won nine German championship titles and the Champions League in 2013 and 2020. In total, he played 363 competitive games for the record champions (10 goals, 7 dismissals).

After his departure, however, the 76-time German international was rarely able to convince in Lyon: in 2022/23 he only appeared eight times in the league, most recently on June 3rd.

In November 2022, Boateng was sentenced to a fine of 1.2 million euros for intentional bodily harm with insult. The conviction has now been overturned. The process is being reopened. It was about an attack on his former partner.
