The Korean badminton team takes its first step toward winning a medal in all sports at the Hangzhou Asian Games. The goal is to erase the nightmare of ‘no medals’ for the first time in 40 years at the Jakarta-Palembang Games five years ago.

Korea will begin its medal hunt starting with the men’s and women’s team event held at the Binjiang Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China on the 28th. Starting on the 2nd of next month, individual matches, including men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, will be held until the 7th.

National team coach Kim Hak-gyun promised to restore the pride of Korean badminton. He said, “All members of the national team, including the coaching staff, are running through a hellish schedule,” and “If we secure the team event, individual medals will naturally follow.”

Legends also mentioned group competitions first. Lee Yong-dae told Kookmin Ilbo on the 27th, “If we build on the initial momentum, we will do well in other sports with confident play.” Wonkwang University professor Kim Dong-moon, a gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, said, “This is our first Asian Games after the no-medal issue, and if we reduce the burden by performing well in the team competition, we will get good results.”

The mood is good recently. At the World Championships last month, Ahn Se-young in the women’s singles, Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong, and Seo Seung-jae and Kang Min-hyuk took the top spot in the mixed and men’s doubles. Women’s doubles team Kim So-young and Kong Hee-yong also won bronze medals, and Korea recorded its best performance ever. This is a point where we can expect an upward trend in Hangzhou.

Korean badminton, which once went through a period of stagnation during the generational change, is beginning to see growth. There were also predictions that the ‘Ahn Se-young effect’ would play a role in the performance of the competition.

Naturally, Ahn Se-young’s performance is also of great interest. Lee Yong-dae said, “My know-how to use the court and the mentality of being ranked No. 1 in the world have improved tremendously. “The process of switching from focusing on defense, which is our strength, to offense is perfect,” he said.
