The Kyoto city education board will pay compensation of 81.86 million yen ($554,000) to a former student who suffered brain damage and was left semi-paralyzed during judo practice, the Mainichi Shimbun reports.

The incident occurred in 2018.

The then first-year high school student from a municipal school was practicing with a student from another school. His rival knocked him down by executing the osoto-gari technique, through which the opponent is knocked down by pulling him and raising one leg backwards to trip him.

The student hit his head on the mat during the fall.

The boy got up and continued practicing under the gaze of a coach.

During a break, the teenager fainted and was immediately taken to a hospital.

He suffered an acute subdural hematoma and a brain contusion. As a consequence he was left paralyzed on the right side and with brain dysfunction and epilepsy.

The Kyoto authorities admitted that there was negligence, since the coach should have verified the student’s condition before continuing with the practice.

This month the educational board of the Japanese city reached an out-of-court agreement with the victim to pay reparations. (International Press)
