Dick Advocaat will not start as national coach of Curaçao, Voetbal International reports. The 76-year-old resident of The Hague was one of the most important candidates and had positive discussions with the Antillean association, but was unable to reach an agreement. The lawyer himself pulled the plug on the negotiations.
“There are still too many open ends to embark on the adventure at this time,” said Advocaat. “Then you are talking about matters in the organization that first need to be properly arranged. However, I have had a number of pleasant conversations and I am positive about the sporting project. It may still become concrete in the near future, but for the time being It’s no longer an option.”
Advocaat left as trainer of ADO Den Haag in June, but left the door ajar regarding a job elsewhere. For the experienced coach, it could have been his eighth job as national coach. Advocaat was previously in charge of the Dutch team and the national teams of the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Russia, Serbia, Belgium and Iraq.
Lawyer should have succeeded Remko Bicentini, who was dismissed this summer. The Dutch-Curaçaoan former footballer had been at the helm since September last year, but had to leave the team due to persistently disappointing results. The new national coach of Curaçao is given the goal of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
