The Basketball World Cup was disappointing for the USA team last week. After the semi-final defeat against eventual world champions Germany, the team coached by star coach Steve Kerr suffered a defeat against neighbors Canada in the bronze medal game and had to settle for fourth place.
A dream team should therefore start again at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. According to the portal The Athletic LeBron James in particular has been promoting a star ensemble since the end of the World Cup. James has already discussed participating in the Olympics with other stars such as Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum and Draymond Green.
Olympic premiere for Curry?
Everyone had signaled their willingness, it was said, citing several sources from the NBA. The two-time Olympic champion LeBron James, who last played for the Americans in London in 2012, and the soon-to-be 35-year-old three-time gold winner Kevin Durant would see the 2024 Summer Games as their “last dance”. For Curry, then 36 years old, it would be his first Olympic Games.
Since 1992, professional players from the NBA have also been allowed to take part in the Olympic Games. The so-called “Dream Team” with Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Earvin “Magic” Johnson won gold with unrivaled ease in Barcelona 31 years ago. All subsequent US teams also completed the mission – with the exception of the 2004 delegation in Athens, when the USA led by James, Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson only brought home bronze.
