Malaysian Shuttlers Mohd Faiq Masawi and Eogene Ewe Ready to Shine at World Junior Championships

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Mohd Faiq Masawi will be part of a new generation of juniors out to make an impression in the World Junior Championships in Spokane, the United States.

The 17-year-old debutant Faiq will join Eogene Ewe in the men’s singles individual competition.

The duo have been tasked to fill the void left behind by Justin Hoh, who has been promoted to the senior team after last year’s world meet in Santander, Spain.

“Faiq has been showing good maturity in his game for the past few months,” said junior singles coach Hazwan Jamaluddin.

“He now has a better understanding on where he needs to improve.

“As coaches, we just need to push him to keep increasing his level.”

The Selangor-born Faiq is out to make amends after he was part of the team that returned home empty handed from the Asian Junior meet in Yogyakarta in July.

But first, Faiq and Eogene will focus on the mixed team event, which started yesterday, together with Aaron Tai-Khang Kai Xing, Bryan Goonting and Low Han Chen (doubles), while the girls are Ong Xin Yee, Siti Zulaikha Azmi (singles); Carmen Ting, Chong Jie Yu and Chan Wen Tse (doubles).

The goal is to finish top of Group C and qualify for the quarter-finals ahead of Poland, Austria, Latvia and England.

The individual events will be held from Oct 2-8.
