Fortunately, Maria Sakkari is still missing a win
A year later, Maria Sakkari is back where she was in Guadalajara in 2022: in the final. But this time the Greek wants to pull through. And finally celebrate their second tournament victory after 2019 in Rabat. The chances of that are not bad. After beating Caroline Garcia 6:3 and 6:0, Sakkari will face Caroline Dolehide in the final, who somewhat surprisingly won against Sofia Kenin 7:5 and 6:3.
“I already felt on the first day here that this could be my week,” said Sakkari after only her second success in the fifth match against Garcia. “This is the place where I will overcome many difficult obstacles and emotions.” Most recently, Sakkari lost in the first round at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. “I’m just happy to be in the final again and to be able to stay until the end of the tournament.”
Dolehide in a final on the WTA tour for the first time
The same applies even more to final opponent Caroline Dolehide. The 25-year-old American, currently only ranked 111th in the WTA charts, is contesting her first ever final on the tour. In the match against Kenin she was down 2:4 in the first set, but then took more and more control.
“It feels fantastic,” said Dolehide after her biggest career success. “I’m so excited for tomorrow. I’m really proud of myself for accomplishing this today. Because Sonya is not an easy opponent. “I had to adjust a few things. And at the end of the day I just played smart.”
