LOS ANGELES (AP) — Julio Urías, the Mexican pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, was arrested near BMO Stadium, where Argentine star Lionel Messi played an MLS game Sunday night in front of a crowd of celebrities.
Exposition Park security personnel reported that Urías was arrested around 11 p.m. inside the park where the stadium is located. Police did not immediately specify the charges against Urías, but said they will provide more details on Monday.
Urías posted $50,000 bail and was released just before 5 a.m., according to Los Angeles County police records.
He will have to appear in court on September 27.
Major League Baseball intends to investigate the allegations.
The 27-year-old lefty was arrested in May 2019 for domestic violence. Urías served a 20-game suspension, decreed by the Major Leagues. But he was not charged by the Los Angeles prosecutor’s office on the condition that he complete a 52-week program on domestic violence.
The Dodgers were traveling to Miami on Monday, where they will begin a six-game road trip against the Marlins on Tuesday. Urías had planned to open the game at the end of the series.
“We know of the incident involving Julio Urías. While we try to gather the facts, he will not be traveling with the team,” the Dodgers said in a statement without offering further details.
Urías is 11-8 with a 4.60 ERA this season. He earns a salary of $14.25 million, in the last year under salary arbitration. He will be a free agent at the end of the season.
He was instrumental in the Dodgers being crowned World Series champions during the abbreviated 2020 season. Urías pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for the save in the deciding sixth game. It was the franchise’s first championship since 1988.
The lefty’s best season was in 2021, when he led the National League with a 20-3 mark.
