Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is under investigation for false accounting for alleged fictitious capital gains regarding the purchase of Victor Osimhen

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is under investigation by the Rome prosecutor’s office for false accounting, regarding an investigation into alleged fictitious capital gains surrounding the purchase of Nigerian footballer Victor Osimhen. The investigation was started in August 2022 in Naples and then the file was transferred to Rome, where De Laurentiis’ film company, Filmauro, has its registered office.

The investigation concerns Napoli’s purchase of Osimhen from the French team Lille, carried out in the summer of 2020: the Nigerian footballer was purchased for around 71 million euros, of which, however, Napoli only paid around 50, because in the sale he sold goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis and three young players from the spring team to Lille as a technical compensation. The four Napoli players were sold together for 21.5 million euros, and generated a capital gain for the club, i.e. they were valued at a higher price than that paid when they were bought. According to the magistrates, however, this evaluation was deliberately exaggerated and would not have reflected the real value of the players, in particular for the three young players from the spring team, who never played for Lille and were immediately loaned out to smaller teams. According to the magistrates, these would therefore be fictitious capital gains, a practice often used in the past by various teams to artificially increase company balance sheets.
