The project was valued at more than 17.5 million lempiras, financed by the mayor’s office with the support of construction companies.
The sports center, which is located in the Copén neighborhood, on 4th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Street, will have the capacity to accommodate more than 230 people in stands, plus other areas that increase the spaces.
The place also provides the opportunity for inclusive disciplines and the necessary parameters for the development of sport at a national and international level.
In the gym they incorporated two dressing rooms equipped with bathrooms and showers for the teams and athletes, an administration office, a room for the referees and offices for basketball and volleyball.
A system of 32 LED lamps that illuminate the entire space, ensuring that the court can be used during extended hours and at night.
Selvin García, son of the late professor Danilo García, appreciated the gesture of paying tribute to the memory of his father, by inaugurating the gymnasium with his name, “this is a very important work for the growth of the entire municipality of Puerto Cortés.”
The mayor gave the kick-off by throwing the basketball into the hoop and later the first sporting event took place on the gymnasium court, with an exhibition match between the Buenos Aires basketball legends and a group of new generations.
María Luisa Martell, mayor of Puerto Cortés, stated that the “Danilo Edgardo García Davis” municipal sports gym is a flagship work that will enhance sports in Puerto Cortés, opening better opportunities to those children and young people who have the talent to focus on disciplines. sports.
