Novak Djokovic Battles Against Daniil Medvedev in US Open Final

Djokovic lowered the intensity slightly, was in trouble with his serve and for the first time gave a break-point to Medvedev. The Serbian saved him with a brilliant cross overspike, to respond to what had been a very good return from Medvedev. Nole went to the net and managed to close the eighth game: 4-4. The Russian then held his serve comfortably.

Novak Djokovic had no problems with his serve so far in the second set: he won his three games without giving up a point, with the Russian standing far behind for the return. Then, Medvedev served 40-15, but the Serbian, with good returns and deep balls, attacked and had a chance to break. The Russian saved it with an open serve and a forehand against a short return. The game entered a high-voltage fight, with long points and powerful forehands. Finally, an ace gave Medvedev the partial 4-3

Both retained their services. A couple of errors with the forehand put Medvedev in trouble, who served 30-30, but he got out of trouble with good serves and an ace to go ahead 3-2 in the second chapter of the final.

For the first time in the match, Daniil Medvedev was ahead in the score. He held serve at the start of the second set and took a 2-1 lead over Djokovic.

Both Djokovic and Medvedev did not have good percentages on their first serves (56 percent for the Russian, 52 for Nole), but the Russian had a difficult time with the second: just 33 percent of the points won. The Serbian finished with 12 winners and 10 unforced errors; 8 and 12, respectively, for Medvedev. DJokovic did not give break points and took one of the three break chances that he counted on his rival’s serve.

With good serves, with enough spin, Djokovic started the ninth game of the match well. He got set-point after a very long rally, with the two moving from side to side. He closed it with a long right hand from Medvedev. The Serbian won the first set 6-3 in 48 minutes of action.

A great return, a double fault and a forehand error by Medvedev gave Djokovic the first set point with the Russian’s serve, who escaped from that complex situation and then another set point, which he saved with a smash after a short balloon. Djokovic leads 5-3 for the first set.

After a weak start, the Russian got on the scoreboard by holding serve. He had his chance when Djokovic served at 15-30, but the Serbian solved the problem with a couple of angled serves and preserved the difference: 4-1 in the first set.

On a leaden and rainy day in the Big Apple, the US Open final will be played with the roof closed at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Whatever the outcome of the final, Djokovic will be world number 1 again on Monday, replacing Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who was unable to retain the crown. The Serbian played all the Grand Slam finals; He won the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and lost Wimbledon to Alcaraz. Likewise, Medvedev will remain in third place in the ATP weekly rankings, although he could get quite close to the second place occupied by Alcaraz.

On the way to the final, Djokovic beat the Frenchman Alexandre Muller (84th), the Spanish Bernabé Zapata Miralles (76th), the Serbian Laslo Djere (38th), the Croatian Borna Gojo (105th) and the Americans Taylor Fritz (9th) and Ben Shelton (47th); He only gave up sets against Djere, whom he beat after being two sets down. Medvedev left behind the Hungarian Attila Balazs (no ranking), the Australians Christopher O’Connell (69th) and Alex De Miñaur (13th), the Argentine Sebastián Báez (32nd), the Russian Andrey Rublev (8th ) and the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz (1st), who was defending the title.

Djokovic and Medvedev played on 14 occasions, with a balance in favor of Nole by 9 to 5. This year they met twice, with one victory per side: the Serbian dominated at the ATP in Adelaide, and the Russian surpassed him in March, in the Dubai tournament. This Sunday will be the fourth final between the two. Djokovic won the definition of the 2021 Australian Open in straight sets and in the same year, in the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000; Medvedv won that final of the US Open 2021, with partials of 6-4 6-4 and 6-4.

Djokovic is already the owner of the record for Grand Slam titles in singles with 23 trophies, and at 36 years old, he will try to win the US Open for the fourth time in his career; the previous ones, in 2011, 2015 and 2018. Medvedev, 27, aims to repeat the title he won in 2021, the only Grand Slam of his career, just after beating Djokovic in the decisive match, and prevented the Serbian from obtaining the Grand Slam (the four major titles in the same season).

We begin the coverage of the match between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev this Sunday for the final of the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season. The game will begin at 5 p.m. in Argentina (4 p.m. in New York), with transmission on ESPN.
