Novak Djokovic Imitates Ben Shelton’s Celebration Gesture in US Open 2023 Semifinals

Novak Djokovic only needed three sets to knock Ben Shelton, who was particularly expensive in the last part of the game, out of the tournament and move into the final of the US Open 2023.

To celebrate his triumph over the shooting star, Djokovic literally grabbed an imaginary phone, held it to his ear and slammed it back onto the receiver. Close observers knew immediately that the 36-year-old was inspired. And from none other than his inferior opponent.

Shelton had made this celebration his signature move in New York and obviously caught Djokovic’s attention in the process.

Was the record Grand Slam champion making fun of Shelton with his gesture? “I just love Ben’s celebration gesture,” Djokovic admitted at the post-match press conference. “I thought she was very original and copied him. I stole his cheer,” he joked.

Shelton feels flattered by Djokovic’s cheers

Shelton also took the scene with humor and was flattered by Djokovic’s imitation.

“If you win the match, you deserve to do whatever you want,” Shelton said. “I learned in my childhood that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
