Novak Djokovic led Team Monty to victory in the Celebrity All Star Match of the Ryder Cup
Let us be clear: Even though the Laver Cup is modeled on the legendary Ryder Cup, the tennis event, which is only seven years old, still does not have the same appeal that its golf counterpart has had for almost a century. And so the continental competition, which is held every two years, has been equipped with a number of entertainment events over the course of its 96 years in order to further increase the media value of the event.
One of the top-class events, at least in terms of personnel, is the “Celebrity All Star Match”, in which celebrities from sports, culture and business are put into two teams in order to be able to match – in a much shorter format – like the big golf professionals. This year the big party is taking place near Rome at the Country & Golf Club Marco Simone.
Djokovic is also successful in golf
What was probably interesting for all tennis fans was the performance of Novak Djokovic, who, unlike Rafael Nadal, has not appeared as a great golf champion in the past. “Nole” was able to rely on playing captain Colin Montgomerie. The head of the opposing team was Corey Pavin, who is no less famous for golf connoisseurs.
And Novak Djokovic wouldn’t be Novak Djokovic, he wouldn’t give his very best in every competition. That’s why it shouldn’t be too surprising that Team Monty left the pitch as 7-4 winners. Djokovic won his match-up alongside Kipp Popert against Formula 1 star Carols Sainz and Tommaso Perrino 3-1.
