Reviving Badminton in Uashat mak Mani-utenam and Sept-Îles: Two Enthusiasts Lead the Way

Two badminton enthusiasts want to bring this sport back to the forefront in Uashat mak Mani-utenam and Sept-Îles, but also introduce young people aged 7 to 12 to it. “We lost feathers,” says Alex Couture.

If last year he set up a league, Alex Couture, badminton coach at the Manikanetish school and wearer of the same hat for the Voyageurs du Cégep de Sept-Îles, wants to breathe new life into badminton.

Mr. Couture and Georges Roy, coordinator of the sports block – education sector at the Manikanetish school, set up the Sept-Îles Uashat mak Mani-utenam badminton club.

These will be supervised training sessions with a group for ages 7 to 12 (free) and one for ages 13 and over. There will also be free badminton on the schedule.

Activities will take place in the Manikanetish school gymnasium. “It’s the new socio center,” says Alex Couture. It will be possible to take advantage of other on-site facilities.

“We have the staff. We will use it to share our support with the community and people of Sept-Îles in the evening. We are inclusive,” underlines Mr. Roy, regarding the civil club.

To find out what young people are interested in, an initiation camp for 7 to 12 year olds will take place on October 7, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with Donald Marchand in attendance.

The objective is also to attract more players to the fields. “The level has been dropping since the pandemic, and we want to create a pool of players and bring back the performance pyramid. We lost feathers,” laments Alex Couture, who also wants the return of civilian tournaments.

“We want to bring badminton back to life at the civilian level, among young people and adults,” mentions Georges Roy. He adds that at the end of the 90s, beginning of 2000, the Innu badminton Club had nearly 80 members, and the Club le Volant in Sept-Îles was also popular.

What also gives hope to the two men is the return of badminton to Baie-Comeau and Havre-Saint-Pierre. “Badminton is progressing at the academic level,” maintains Mr. Roy.
