Ronald Pröll’s Early Exit Seals Disappointment for Austrian Team at Under-21 European Judo Championships

From an Austrian perspective, the third day of competition at the Under-21 European Judo Championships in The Hague lasted a full 3:25 minutes. Then the opening defeat of Ronald Pröll (- 90 kg/UJZ Mühlviertel/Upper Austria) against Miljan Radulj (SRB/later bronze medalist) was sealed. The 18-year-old from Upper Austria, who came third in the Youth European Championships last year, looked like the sure winner for long stretches of the fight. Radulj received two shidos for inactivity and had his back to the wall. But then Pröll got caught on the ground and lost with Ippon. The early exit was sealed.

With a third place (Elena Dengg/- 70) and a fifth place (Marcus Auer/- 60), Austria holds 12th place in the medal table – out of a total of 43 nations. So far, 15 countries have been able to enjoy precious metals. The mixed team competition will take place in The Hague on Sunday, the ÖJV team will face the top seeded judo power France.
