Ronnie O’Sullivan (47) won the Shanghai Masters for the fourth time in a row on Sunday by beating world champion Luca Brecel (47). That means a new trophy for the trophy cabinet, but ‘The Rocket’ says he is not participating in that. O’Sullivan never keeps track of his cups himself, he told the BBC.

“I plan to give this cup to a friend who is going to open a club here. So the trophy stays in China,” the Englishman said surprisingly. “I always give them away. A friend of mine has one and I once gave a cup to a child in the audience. Trophies really don’t interest me. I’ve sold a lot of them too. I don’t want to have any memorabilia in my house when I’m eighty. My equipment and cues also all have to go by then.”

Praise for Brecel

“I’m not surprised Luca has done so well recently,” O’Sullivan continued. “He is by no means a surprising world champion. He just has so much talent.” Yet our compatriot lost to the Englishman in the final of the Shanghai Masters. O’Sullivan clearly had his day. “I was just having one of those days where everything was going right when it was supposed to be right,” he explained.
