Ryder Cup McIlroy: “Fuel on the fire for Sunday”

Involved in a verbal clash with Patrick Cantlay’s caddy on Saturday, Rory McIlroy is expecting a tense final day of the Ryder Cup.

Rory McIlroy (Europe): “Matt (Fitzpatrick) and I played well. Obviously, (Cantlay-Clark) had a great finish to the match and Patrick (Cantlay) made those three great putts at the end to seal the deal. So hats off to them. They played a great match, and yes, there were some small incidents at the 18th (with Patrick Cantlay’s caddy). It’s just fuel to the fire for tomorrow (Sunday). »

Luke Donald (Europe captain): “I was there at 18. I saw what happened when Patrick made his putt and Joe (LaCava, his caddy) waved his cap. Obviously the audience did this all day long. I told Rory about it. He first politely asked Joe to move aside, as he was in his line of sight (of his final putt). He stood there without moving for a while and kept waving his cap, and I think Rory was upset about that. This incident continued in the parking lot, where Justin Rose and Shane Lowry supported Rory. I didn’t attend, I’ll talk to Rory about it. But that doesn’t change my plans for Sunday. We will play with passion and respect, I will repeat that to my players. »
