Saving Green Spaces: The Battle to Preserve Public Land in Genzano

GENZANO (current news) – The note from the environmentalists

ilmamilio.it – press release

For too long the territory of the Castelli Romani municipalities has been subjected to continuous aggression due to a systematic overbuilding of the soil, with a consequent increase in the anthropic load, loss of the original landscape and decline in the quality of life of the inhabitants. Sometimes the municipal administrations tend to alienate public assets and lands dear to the same citizens who use them on a daily basis, thus favoring the process of privatization of public assets. An emblematic case has also recently arisen in Genzano, where the municipal administration, last August 10, published the public auction notice for the alienation of 8 properties owned by the municipality.

In particular, there is also an important “building” land for sale in via Toscana, in the “boschetto” area, currently used as a green area. It should be highlighted how the aforementioned land represents a public space in fact self-managed by the citizens of the neighborhood who use it as a small green lung, essential to their community life, to meet up in company, practice sports by the youngest, etc. Not only that, but the place in question is also near the Villa degli Antonini, an archaeological site of primary importance not only for the city of Genzano, but also for all the Castelli Romani. Italia Nostra Castelli Romani, already in a past conference, on 28 September 2020, precisely in Genzano, as in many other locations, vehemently denounced the seriousness of the persistent phenomenon of soil consumption in the Castelli Romani, as well as in Genzano.

We therefore make a public appeal to ask with determination for a rethinking by the municipal administration, so that the voice of citizens is also heard and the few valuable green spaces still available in our cities are preserved, such as, in particular, the one in via Toscana in Genzano, a space still necessary for the social life of the citizens, preventing it from being a new victim of the prevailing concrete and building speculation.

Enrico Del Vescovo, president of Italia Nostra Castelli Romani.
