Seiya Suzuki had three hits with a homer and three RBIs, Jameson Taillon was efficient for six innings and the Chicago Cubs blanked the Colorado Rockies 6-0 Friday at Wrigley Field.
With this victory, the Cubs ensure they finish the day at least tied for third place in the National League draft team standings. They are at the heart of a three-way fight with the Miami Marlins and the Cincinnati Reds for the last place giving access to the playoffs with only one game separating the three teams. The Marlins and Reds will respectively host the Milwaukee Brewers and the Pittsburgh Pirates in the evening.
Suzuki opened the scoring in the first inning with a single before hitting his 20th home run of the season in the fourth, a two-run slap. He crossed the plate for the second time in the game on Jared Young’s two-run homer in the sixth.
Dansby Swanson drove in the Cubs’ other run with a single in the seventh. He thus reached the mark of 80 points produced for a third season in a row.
Taillon (8-10) signed his first victory since August 8, ending a streak of seven starts without earning a victory. He allowed four hits and four walks and struck out seven batters.
Nico Hoerner (42nd), Miles Mastrobuoni (11th) and Pete Crow-Armstrong (1st) stole a base each for the Cubs.
Rockies rookie starter Noah Davis (0-3) allowed three runs in five innings.
