Sport Integrity Global Alliance Condemns Spanish Leader’s “Abomination” Behavior at Thinking Football Summit

The leader was unhappy with the lack of solutions presented by the bodies of justice and the guardianship of sport, which he considers to be passive and conniving with this type of situation.

The executive director of the Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA), Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, today took a public position on Luis Rubiales’ kiss to Jenni Hermoso, considering the behavior of the Spanish leader an “abomination”.

Within the scope of the Thinking Football Summit, in a conference that aimed to debate the integrity of sport in various matters, the lawyer and leader of SIGA was surprised by the attitude of the president of the Spanish Football Federation, whom he knows personally, and was adamant to say that “there are no two sides” to the situation.

“I grew up in a culture where we were taught to respect all individuals, of all genders and races. This is true in all sectors, including sport. I’ve known Luis Rubiales for many years. What happened surprised and saddened me because it shouldn’t have happened. No individual, in a position of power, can take advantage, even if unconsciously, to do something like that”, he sentenced.

The leader was unhappy with the lack of solutions presented by the bodies of justice and the guardianship of sport, which he considers to be passive and conniving with this type of situation.

“What happens to players in the US Championship, to athletes in gymnastics… What lessons do we learn? What solutions are there to prevent these horrible crimes from happening again and the people who commit them from being brought to justice? Where are the integrity debates for everyone dealing with young athletes or silent victims of abuse?

Emanuel Macedo de Madeiros also revealed that the case is no exception to similar ones, of which he has already been aware, with the fact that it was an act carried out “under the spotlight”, in front of “millions of people”, the only particularity.

“All the episodes that followed were equally sad to watch. A woman was in a vulnerable position, it was a trauma, a shock and no one prepared her for such a situation. I have seen this happen in countless situations, this time it was in front of millions, under the lights. […] We take these situations very seriously. There are no two sides to this story. It’s an abomination,” she concluded.

After Spain won the final of the women’s world championship, in Sydney, on August 20, Rubiales kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth, which the footballer later said was not consented, contrary to what the president of the federation has claimed.

Earlier, on the stadium bench, Rubiales had touched his own genitals to celebrate the Spanish victory.

The two behaviors earned him complaints from the government of Spain to the Administrative Court of Sport, which decided to open a disciplinary process against Rubiales, and the suspension of FIFA as president of the Spanish federation, for 90 days.

The second edition of the Thinking Football Summit, an event organized by Liga Portugal, takes place between today and Saturday, in Porto, with several discussion panels that encompass the various dimensions of the sport, bringing together “industry professionals, companies, fans and students”.
