Success and Challenges for Kaiserslautern Judoka at Rhineland-Palatinate Championships

Numerous judoka from Kaiserslautern took part in the Rhineland-Palatinate individual championships in the Speyer Judomaxx – some of them very successfully.

However, only the U13 and U15 age groups were on the mat. The U18 class was canceled due to a lack of entries. “The date immediately after the summer holidays and after a training break of several weeks was probably responsible for this,” suspects André Wittek, trainer at the Kaiserslautern Judo Sports Club (JSV). In the U13 and U15 categories, the JSV had eleven judoka on the mat. The club athletes are all sports students from the Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium in Kaiserslautern.

Five of the young judoka took to the mat in the U13. Gold went to Adriana Puntureri, who secured the Rhineland-Palatinate championship title after a judge’s decision. Livian Hermann, actually still in the U11, won bronze just like his club colleague Leni Volz. Ben Wilhelm and Theodor Wittek gained competition experience, but did not place.

Steinbrenner stands up to “heavy guys”

In the U15, Gabriela Pereskocka, Maxima Zink, Noah Njonga and Paul Steinbrenner prevailed in strong fights in their weight classes and won gold. Steinbrenner was particularly convincing. Not only did he come back after a serious competition injury in the spring and a long break, he contested the championship in the open weight class plus 66. One opponent weighed almost 120 kilos, almost twice as much as the JSV player. He was not impressed by this and confidently asserted himself in his duels against significantly heavier opponents. “This performance gives us hope for more,” said coach Wittek, more than satisfied with Steinbrenner and all the JSV athletes at the end of the championship. The two silver medals from the U15 fighters Lina Stark and Andrej Müller, who returned to Kaiserslautern with the runner-up title, also contributed to the overall performance.

The club has successfully started the new judo season. According to Wittek, the JSV is currently looking for sponsors in order to be able to pay the competition fees for the children without significantly increasing membership fees. “We would also like to offer additional training opportunities and further develop the club,” explains Wittek.
