Teenage Referees Insulted and Harassed by Coach at Baseball Game

Teenagers who were refereeing a baseball game at Laviolette Park in Trois-Rivières on Tuesday were quite scared. A coach raised his voice and started insulting the two 14-year-old referees after they had reviewed a decision.

For the mother of one of the youngsters, the scene is unacceptable. Although her son is doing well, Chantale Bouchard wants to denounce the situation.

It persisted, then, suddenly, there is one who has really flipped out. He came out of the shelter saying, “You’re just two little referee crisses,” she says. Then he jumped on the youngsters. Two others coachs Who were coaching with him stopped him, held him back, so he wouldn’t jump on the referees. […] I wish this coach– there is far from any sports center where there are young people, where there are referees, so that he does not reoffend.

Ms. Bouchard has learned that the coach in question could be subject to a sanction as of Friday, which she wishes to be exemplary.

Not a unique case

In Quebec, scenes of this kind involving parents or coaches are multiplying on social networks.

Sport’Aide general manager Sylvain Croteau does not believe there are more such events. He is rather of the opinion that society has woken up and denounces more. According to him, this kind of behavior has consequences for young people.

From the moment he gets carried away in this way that he disrespects the referees, the officials, well that sends the message to their young people that they can do the same thing. And that is easily observed.

The teams that often cause the most difficulties for the referees, the players when they disrespect a referee, look behind the bench, look at the coach, it’s a safe bet that he himself has behaviors that are not not acceptable. Look at the parents, the spectators who accompany these groups, they also usually have behaviors that are very questionable, he points out.

Experience at the expense of behavior?

There is currently a shortage of referees in Quebec in almost all disciplines. Such an event is detrimental to recruitment and retention, according to Sylvain Guimond, doctor in sports psychology.

He would like coaches to be chosen for their approach with young people and not necessarily for their experience in sport. For him, some people take sport too seriously and forget that there are humans behind it all.

You will see, even in the National League, anywhere, in the youngest people, people arrive in an arena, they live in a sports place, then we see it in soccer everywhere, it is as if there was no longer any rule that held. So people lose their skills. Then there, we face behaviors that are unacceptable. It’s really because sport brings us to high levels of emotions. Then, unfortunately, it requires control.

Baseball Québec and Baseball Mauricie did not respond to our interview requests. The Minister responsible for Sports Isabelle Charest was not available to answer our questions.
