In 1999, Marc Lièvremont was convinced that he was experiencing his last World Cup with the French team. He promised himself never to coach… However, it was him who was sought out to become coach of the French XV in 2007. After hesitation, Marc Lièvremont accepted, but the world of rugby was skeptical. And the 2011 World Cup is in our sights.
However, his journey started strong with a Grand Slam at the VI Nations Tournament in 2010. Then came the preparation for the World Cup. The French team then takes up residence in Chambon-sur-Lignon, in the Massif Central, between training, hiking, camping and archery. Then the France team flies to New Zealand to compete in the World Cup. But Marc Lièvremont’s players do not continue their momentum. They have a series of mediocre, even humiliating, group matches and lose certain matches even though they are heavily favored. The climate is tense between Lièvremont and his players but also between the coach and the press.
He will then try everything to get his team back on track. When abrupt speeches are no longer enough, he makes changes to major positions in the team and focuses on young recruits. As the quarter-finals against the English approach, Marc Lièvremont feels alone, a distance has been established with the players.
