The 47th All Japan Club Baseball Championship was held in Niigata Prefecture in early September. Sixteen strong teams from all over the country gathered together to win the title of Japan’s best adult baseball club team. Among them were Diamond Phoenix players who wore the same three diamonds on their chests as the corporate teams Mitsubishi Motors Okazaki and Mitsubishi Motors Kurashiki Oceans.

Mitsubishi Motors Kyoto, the corporate team that was the predecessor of Dia Phoenix, was founded in 1961 and has participated in the city competition and the Japan Championship nine times. The team won second place in the 1995 Japan Championship, but the team’s history came to an end in 2002 due to the company’s business restructuring. However, after a break of about five years, the engine started up again. Alumni and others formed the group as “Diamond Phoenix” in hopes of reviving the prestigious group.

Until now, they have been thwarted by strong teams such as Yamato Takada Club (Nara), which has won the club championship five times, but manager Takechiho Iwasaki (60) tells his players, “Don’t forget the pride of fighting with the Three Diamonds on your chest.” continued. Of the approximately 30 players, about half are employees of Mitsubishi Motors, and the rest come from a variety of affiliations, including firefighters, teachers, and employees of other companies, but they all come together under the same Three Diamonds. It took 16 years after starting over again to finally get a national ticket.

The first match. In the stands, former players from their time on corporate teams, fans who were familiar with those days, and Mitsubishi Motors employees from all over the country rushed to cheer them on, holding fans and towels with the “Three Diamonds” design. As a result, although they had 12 hits, twice as many as their opponents, their pitching and hitting gears did not mesh, resulting in a 5-9 loss. Coach Iwasaki bit his lip, saying, “The company has provided us with an extremely luxurious training environment. I’m disappointed that I couldn’t repay the favor with results,” but he emphasized, “This is the start.” Captain Takumi Kihara (27) also expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “There is no doubt that we have taken a big step forward. We have achieved our next goal of winning one game at the national tournament.”

What motivates the players is the success of the “brother team.” Mitsubishi Motors Okazaki advanced to the top eight in this summer’s city competition. Mitsubishi Motors Kurashiki Oceans made a return appearance in the 2020 intercity competition for the first time in 16 years. Captain Takuki Kihara, an employee of Mitsubishi Motors who works on engine assemblies, said, “As long as we’re wearing the same uniform as them, we can’t play embarrassingly. We’ll eventually build a team that can compete on an equal footing with corporate teams.” Burn your fighting spirit. He intends to use this tournament as fuel to accelerate his path to recovery.
