The Summer Transfer Window: A Look at Clubs’ Spending and Earnings

The money rolled freely in our country. After a busy transfer summer, it’s time to take stock: which clubs spent or collected the most? An overview.

All amounts below come from the specialist Transfermarkt, a global authority on transfer pricing. No amount was known for a limited number of deals (especially small ones).

RWDM spent the most, Westerlo also continued

Who could have predicted this before summer?

With 28.35 million euros, PhD student RWDM was the club that spent the most in the past mercato. Of course, a crucial comment must be made, because 25 million of that sum went to Ernest Nuamah’s controversial ghost transfer for sister club Lyon. Without that deal, the people of Brussels scored in the right column.

With 24.25 million euros, Club Brugge also made it through this summer. Certainly for Igor Thiago (7.9 million), Hugo Vetlesen (7.75 million) and Michal Skoras (6 million) it went deep into the pockets.

Anderlecht completes the podium with 22.5 million – Dolberg (5 million) was the most expensive purchase, followed by Luiz Vazquez (4.5 million) and Thorgan Hazard (4 million).

We find the biggest surprise in four with Westerlo. The Turkish owners invested heavily to give the Kempen team a quality injection – although the returns are still awaited. For deep striker Matija Frigan, the club paid no less than 5.5 million.

At the bottom we find KV Mechelen, KV Kortrijk, Eupen and STVV. They all spent less than one million on new players and mainly relied on free bargains or loan transfers.

Club Brugge, Union and Anderlecht built up a piggy bank

The accounts of our clubs turn green.

11 of the 16 first division teams ended the summer mercato with a win. Club Brugge cashed the most with 46 million in income from departures – Abakar Sylla (20 million) and Noa Lang (12.5 million) in particular boosted the club’s coffers.

Due to the many departures, Union also did lucrative business. Record transfer Victor Boniface accounted for 20 million of the 35.75 million in sums collected.

With Anderlecht (32 million), Antwerp (21.85 million) and KAA Gent (14.3 million), other top clubs complete the top 5.
