Last Tuesday, Iván Sáez de Cortázar, a 32-year-old basketball player, lost his life in a traffic accident.
According to Europa Press, the accident took place minutes before four in the afternoon, on the A-624 highway, near Amurrio. The accident involved the car in which Iván was traveling and a truck in which a 46-year-old man was traveling, who was slightly injured.

As a result of the accident, Iván died instantly, leaving the basketball world shocked.
Iván Sáez was 1.98 meters tall and played as a center. He trained in the Baskonia and Araberri youth teams. His career as a basketball player also led him to play with Goierri, in Urretxu, in the 2012/2013 season.
After that, Iván signed for Ointxe, in Arrasate, where he played until 2017. Since then, Sáez played for Tabirako de Durango, in the fourth state category. It was in this team where he achieved promotion to EBA in the Illumbe Final Four.

The club wanted to remember him and pay tribute to him through their social networks. “We will never forget you, your ability to work, your ritual before games, your daily dedication, your trips to Durango from Amurrio, your always unmistakable smile,” they wrote.
Other clubs have also wanted to show solidarity with Iván’s death and have flooded the networks with messages in his memory.
“The basketball family is in mourning. Our player and dear friend Iván Sáez de Cortázar has left us. He left a great mark on his teammates, coaches and our entire family. The club offers its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones,” wrote Ointxe, the club in which he played.
