Trailblazing NFL Player Carl Nassib Announces Retirement and Focuses on Philanthropy

Defensive end Carl Nassib, who in 2021 became the first openly gay player to play a regular season game in the NFL, announced his retirement on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old played seven seasons in the Goodell circuit, including 2022 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is best known for revealing his homosexuality in a video on Instagram in June 2021.

“It’s always been my dream to play in the NFL, even as a backup, and I truly feel like the luckiest person on the planet. […] I can truly hang my helmet and tell myself that I gave everything I had,” the Penn State University product wrote on social media.

Nassib made 38 starts in 99 regular season games. He had one interception and 25.5 sacks. Drafted in 2016 by the Cleveland Browns, he also wore the uniform of the Las Vegas Raiders.

According to “USA Today,” the American will now turn to the non-profit organization Rayze and work with the NFL on diversity and philanthropy efforts.
