Travis Kelce’s Status Uncertain for 2023 NFL Season Opener Due to Knee Injury

Tight end Travis Kelce’s participation is in doubt for the 2023 NFL season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions because the veteran suffered a hyperextended knee in training Tuesday.

On the injury report prior to the Chiefs-Lions game, Kelce was listed as questionable after missing practice Wednesday. The tight end was the only player placed from Kansas City on the report; wide receiver Kadarius Toney and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed were released.

Jason Kelce, Travis’s brother and center for the Philadelphia Eagles, said his brother will play against Detroit. The offensive lineman told WIP that “as far as they know, the knee is fine and it just has to go down.”

In the case of the Detroit Lions, the only player ruled out is cornerback Emmanuel Moseley. The 27-year veteran practiced on a limited basis with a knee injury. The other members of the team who were on the report during the week were defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs, center Frank Ragnow and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu.

Travis Kelce’s incredible run without missing a game due to injury

Kelce has shown impeccable durability in recent years as he hasn’t missed a game through injury since his rookie season. His rookie season was short due to a knee injury and he only saw activity for one game. However, since then he has been available for all parties; head coach Andy Reid has decided to rest him in two games last week when the Chiefs no longer had anything to play for (2017 and 2020)

However, the graduate of the University of Cincinnati has been out of activity due to illness. The tight end missed the Week 16 game of the 2021 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers because he tested positive for COVID-19.
