Valley City State Football Hosts Mayville State for Homecoming Game in NSAA Conference

Valley City State football hosts Mayville State University on Saturday as the Vikings and Comets meet in a North Star Athletic Association conference game.

Saturday is also VCSU’s Homecoming Football game. The day starts with a parade downtown at 10:30 a.m. Tailgating at the stadium begins at 11 a.m., and the beer garden opens at 1 p.m. Kickoff of the game is at 2 p.m. from VCSU’s Lokken Stadium.

Valley City State enters with a 2-1 overall record, starting conference play with a 14-6 road victory last weekend at Dakota State. The Comets are currently 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Mayville lost 41-18 to Dickinson State and 56-34 to Waldorf in their two conference games.

LAST YEAR: The Vikings and Comets played in the Fargodome to end the 2022 season and put on a show. VCSU survived a high-scoring contest, building an early lead and holding off the Comets for a 48-40 victory.

REMATCH: VCSU and Mayville will rematch later this season, playing Oct. 28 in Mayville.

HAND POW: Riley Gerhardt earned his second NSAA Defensive Player of the Week award last week after recording 3 sacks in VCSU’s win at Dakota State. Gerhardt set VCSU’s career record for total tackles for loss and now stands at 49.5 TFL in his career. That breaks the old mark of 46.5 TFL held by Joe Maresh.

HALL OF FAME: The VCSU Vikings Hall of Fame Class of 2023 is football heavy as the 2005 team is being inducted along with defensive lineman Joe Maresh (2002-06), offensive lineman Travis Lester (2002-05) and running back Aaron Kramlich (1985-87). Also being inducted are volleyball players Heidi (Larson) Backstrom and Megan (Floerke) Jacob.
