According to information from “Bild”, the Belgian Karel Geraerts, 41, is to become the new coach of the second division club FC Schalke 04. The talks with sports director Peter Knäbel and sports director André Hechelmann are well advanced and the deal is almost perfect, the newspaper reported on Saturday.
Accordingly, Geraerts should play in Gelsenkirchen next week and make his debut after the international break in the away game at Karlsruher SC (October 22nd). Geraerts most recently coached the surprise Belgian club Union Saint Gilloise. Despite the runner-up title, the club parted ways with Geraerts.
The Bundesliga relegated team is looking for a successor for Thomas Reis, who was released at the end of September. Since then, Matthias Kreutzer has looked after the team as interim coach. Schalke is in the relegation zone in the 2nd Bundesliga.
