John van ‘t Schip will definitively complete the season as interim coach of Ajax, the Dutch club has confirmed. The 59-year-old former player of the club starts his first day at work on Monday. Van ‘t Schip must remove Ajax from its historically poor last place in the Eredivisie.

Van ‘t Schip has signed a contract in Amsterdam until mid-2025. Initially he was going to work in the technical heart of the club, but he is now finishing the season as a coach. “I am happy that it has been completed and I am very much looking forward to starting at the club where it all started for me,” he says on the website. “I have a very good feeling from the conversations I have had with everyone involved about this. Ajax must quickly take the sporting path upwards and I am happy to contribute to that.”
“John is a born Ajax player who has gained a lot of experience at home and abroad, both on and off the field,” says interim general manager Jan van Halst. “As far as we are concerned, he is the right person for now to put a positive spin on the performance. Firstly as head coach of the first team. In the longer term, another technical role will be on the horizon for him.”
Successor Steijn
Van ‘t Schip succeeds Maurice Steijn, who decided to resign last week after the 4-3 defeat against FC Utrecht after consultation with the club management. On Sunday afternoon against leader PSV, Hedwiges Maduro was on the bench. He saw his club lose 5-2 in Eindhoven and thus drop to last place.
Valkanis is also coming to Amsterdam with Van ‘t Schip. The 49-year-old Greek Australian previously worked with the former Dutch international at Melbourne City, PEC Zwolle and the Greek national team. It is expected that the staff, with Maduro and Said Bakkati, will remain intact.
