Andrey Rublev Advances to Quarterfinals at ATP Masters Tournament in Shanghai with Solid Victory over Tommy Paul

Andrey Rublev defeated the American Tommy Paul in two tight sets.

Before the round of 16 encounter in Shanghai, Andrey Rublev and Tommy Paul had met five times on the tour. The world number 7 was able to from Russia defeated his US opponent, who is currently ranked 12th, four times.

Paul got the first break of the game in the sixth game, but then had to accept the 4:4 equalizer. From now on, Rublev was more dominant with his quick groundstrokes and took advantage of his first break chance in the eleventh game when the 26-year-old American missed an easy volley. The Muscovite then served out the first round.

In the second act, with the exception of the fifth game, in which Paul had to go over deuce four times and fend off a break ball, both players played their serve games confidently until the score was 5:5. In the American’s following service game, Rublev earned a break chance, which he used overhead on the second follow-up. Similar to the first set, Rublev brought the lead to the finish on his own serve for the final 7:5, 7:5 success in 1:36 hours.

In the round of the last eight, Rublev will face the Frenchman Ugo Humbert, who clearly dominated the American JJ Wolf in their round of 16 encounter with a 6-1, 6-2 win in 57 minutes.
