Anthony Davis: The Lakers’ Push for a New Triple Threat

Anthony Davis is one of the most complete players in the NBA. His defense is his calling card, but the reality is that he can provide a lot of offense, mainly by playing under the rim.

Now the Lakers want “AD” to add a new weapon to his arsenal; one they desperately need: triple. Coach Darvin Ham has the mission of turning Davis into a long-range threat and to achieve this he has a plan.

“I’ve asked Anthony to attempt six 3-pointers per game. Three per half, at least. I wouldn’t set that goal for him if I didn’t think he was capable of achieving it,” Darvin Ham said after practice on Tuesday, October 10.

The reality is that Davis knows he has this shortcoming and during the offseason he worked with Lakers assistant coach Chris Jent to improve this aspect. Last year Davis made 25.7% of the three-pointers he attempted.

If we evaluate his three-point percentage in the last three contests, it is really poor, since he has barely converted 23.8% of the shots he has taken. It is worth mentioning that “La Ceja” has made 244 three-pointers since the 2020-21 harvest. If Davis takes six three-pointers per game in the 2023-24 season, he would attempt a total of around 336 shots (taking as a reference the 56 games he played in 2022-23), many more than he has attempted in the last three contests.

“I want to get more three-pointers. It’s been a point of emphasis this offseason. The league has changed a lot now a lot of three-pointers are being shot. I just want to have confidence in my three-point shot and let it fly,” said Davis after the warm-up game against the Brooklyn Nets.

So far, “La Ceja” has not done badly shooting from three in this preseason, because in the 27 minutes he has played between Golden State and Brooklyn he has three baskets in six shots.
