Athens Secures Second Victory, Continuing Strong Start in Argentine Basketball League

Athens continues to be built. Brick by brick, he seeks to strengthen himself in his difficult journey through the Argentine Basketball League. El Verde added the second victory in a row at the start of the season, beating San Isidro de San Francisco in a high-voltage Córdoba duel by 83 to 69.

The General Bustos neighborhood team had presented itself in the new category last Saturday with an 80-73 victory against Sportivo Suardi.

Juan Cruz Oberto had another outstanding performance. The Las Varillas center, with 17 points and 6 rebounds, made sure that the Green team did not miss Roquez Johnson, who missed the second game. Manuel Alonso was the scorer with 18 points, while point guard Nicolás Zurschmitten was key in the closing, with 13 points and 8 rebounds.

On Wednesday, again at home, Atenas will play from 9 p.m. with Deportivo Norte.

For San Isidro, after its debut, another risky visit is coming on Wednesday, to Barrio Parque from 8 p.m.

The party of Atenas and San Isidro

San Isidro started better, dominating the paint with Christhoper Hooper and took an 8-5 lead in less than three minutes. Atenas, with its numerous resources, had its first scorer in Manuel Alonso and went ahead 10-8 before four minutes.

Furthermore, the Negro Peirone team circulated the ball in attack and found free players to extend the difference to 19-10. But, as happened in the debut with Suardi, Verde sometimes abuses the three-point shot, and San Isidro took advantage of it to reduce the score to 15-19 by closing the first segment.

The General Bustos neighborhood team started well in the second quarter, with the contribution of the spare parts and stretched 30-21 in 4 minutes. But he entered the “crazy” rhythm of San Isidro. Pirincho Beltramo’s team is very clear about what he plays and how he “took the heat” on Atenas, scoring a 9-0 run and tying it at 30 with 3’12 on the clock.

The Green did not make it from three points (3/14 in the first half) and the San Francisco Falcons took the first half by 39 to 38.

Athens opened the second half with a 6-0 run to once again lead 44-39 in two minutes.

The General Bustos neighborhood team understood that, since the three-pointers did not enter, the business was attacking the rim, either with the passing game or penetrating. This is how they made a difference and took a 10 lead: 53-43 with 3’20 left to play. José Montero and Juan Cruz Oberto, in a separate duel against their former team, began to weigh on the match.

San Isidro always won below the opposing ring, with Hooper or with the boy Jeremías Diotto, but Atenas, with more variations, won the third episode 60-53.

Peirone’s team tried to close their painted zone and also maintain order in the attack. And he insisted on going towards the rival basket, taking advantage in one-on-one, mainly through Nicolás Zurschmitten. Also, in three free kicks from Alonso (they were thrown by Montero who came out with a severe ankle sprain), he extended the difference to 11, 71-62 in 4 minutes.

With that advantage, he worked towards the end to reach the closing comfortably and celebrate again.
