Australian Open to Increase Number of Sessions and Add Third Day to First Round in 2024

Craig Tiley, tournament director, explained that the change comes after analyzing feedback from players and fans.

Following this change, something that Roland-Garros already did a few years ago, the first round will now be played over three days instead of two, which will also give fans an additional day of competition.

Starting one day before the tournament in 2024 will increase the number of Australian Open sessions in the three stadiums from 47 to 52. The daytime sessions at Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena will feature a minimum of two matches, down from the previous three, to limit the possibility of late-night finals. Night sessions will continue to feature a minimum of two games and the John Cain Arena schedule also remains the same.
