The 17-year-old from Vorarlberg made it to the junior finals of the best eight U18 players in Chengdu, China.
The youngster, coached by ÖTV sports director Jürgen Melzer, slipped into the starting field due to a last-minute cancellation by an opponent. The competition begins in Chengdu on Monday.
Schwärlzer should not lack self-confidence. This week he is in the round of 16 at the ITF J500 tournament in Osaka (Japan), where he will meet 15th-ranked Russian Daniil Sarksian as number two on the seed list.
