Bakery Basket Piacenza Falls Short Against Pielle Livorno: Final Score 67-78

A good performance from coach Salvenimi’s boys is not enough to defeat Pielle Livorno: the final result is 67-78. Third round of the Lnp Old Wild West 2023/24 National Serie B championship, and Bakery Basket Piacenza faces Pielle Livorno. The game is played at a high pace right from the start, and even if both teams make big mistakes on their shots, neither coach calls a timeout. A sign that they are still satisfied with how their players approached the challenge. The first advantage for the red and whites comes in the 4th minute, with a Besedic ‘on fire’ which scores the score 10-9. The Slovenian center worries his opponents both near the basket and from the arc. But if Livorno is unable to score consistently it is also thanks to the defensive work of coach Salvemini’s boys. In particular Maglietti is a stamp, but in general it is the whole team that sacrifices itself for the common good.

After about three minutes of dry attacks, Pielle managed to score a 7-0 lead interrupted by the support of captain Mastroianni, well triggered by Maglietti. If the Bakery attack struggled a bit in the second part of the opening quarter, at the beginning of the second half it was a storm. Besedic and Wiltshire score from long range, Soviero gets on his scooter to reach -1, and the guests call a suspension after just under 3′ of play. Pielle scores 4 points in 6′, due to the transit ban that the red and whites post in the painted area. Three accelerations by Criconia, in addition to charging the opponents with fouls, produce 6 points for the 28-25. Piacenza first reaches a 5-point lead when Besedic catches Criconia himself in the corner; and then it goes to 40-34 after Livorno had tied at 33.

Upon returning from the locker rooms, the guests were much more precise with their shots. Mastroianni tries to lead the charge with a three-point play, but Livorno tries to extend the lead to 44-53 in the 26th minute. With the grit and claws that distinguish this Bakery, after reaching -10 it is the baskets of Wiltshire and Soviero that keep the red and whites in their wake. Piacenza does not intend to give in and begins the final period with a lot of defense. From rebounds he builds attacks with first Criconia and then Marchiaro who score from the corner for -3, heating up the atmosphere of the PalaBakery. Livorno calls a timeout, but Soviero steals the ball on the throw-in and acrobatically scores the 61-62. The Piellini reaction is vehement, with a partial score of 11-0. On Lo Biondo’s triple with 2’30” to go, the segment of visiting fans breathed more than a sigh of relief, because their team had to work hard to tame Piacenza, who left the pitch with their heads held high.
