Belgian Basketball Star Makes his NBA Debut in Portland

He took his first steps in the south of Brussels at the Saint-Hubert Alumni Sports Association (ASA). With his afro, the teenager was as capable of obliterating his opponents as he was of doing the defensive work. At 5 years old, he was already dribbling between his legs and behind his back. During his first training in 2006, spectators were amazed by his technical qualities. He was quickly nicknamed “Baby Jordan”. He exudes great self-confidence. Besides his talent, he doesn’t count the hours he works. After training, he could stay alone, in the rain, to toil again and again.

During his adolescence, he was systematically integrated into teams older than him. Wherever he performs, he arouses admiration. Even that of his opponents.

At 12, he joined Woluwe United where he completed his Belgian studies before leaving at 16 for the USA where he joined the university championship. He always kept the dream of joining the NBA in the back of his mind.

The rapid rise of this Boitsfortois should give ideas to young Belgian basketball players. “It is also important to me to represent my country. I take on a role of example for the youngest in Belgium and Brussels. By working hard, anything can happen.”

After some procrastination this summer, the Belgian finally landed in Portland. The Brussels native was traded by the Suns as part of the three-team trade that sent Blazers star Damian Lillard to Milwaukee.

The NBA season, which starts on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, will therefore have a little Belgian accent.

Portland is not called upon to play leading roles in the big league. Whatever. The Belgian winger will have the opportunity to show himself. This week, he will become the second Belgian to play an official match in the NBA after Didier Mbenga.
