The Bundesliga has issued penalties against Rapid and Sturm after their fans’ pyrotechnic offenses. The people of Hütteldorf won’t let them sit there.
The Senate 1 of the domestic league fined Rapid 50,000 euros and deducted three points, which was suspended for a period of 24 months. The next serious offense within this probation period would result in a penalty. The Viennese Ultras are responsible for this, as they ignited pyrotechnics in the game against Sturm Graz to mark their 35th anniversary, causing the game to be interrupted for around ten minutes.
Point deduction! Rapidly punished by the league for fan fireworks
However, the Hütteldorfers do not want to accept the harsh Bundesliga verdict, as managing director Steffen Hofmann made clear in a club statement on Tuesday.
Rapid wants to take action against punishment
“After legal consultation, we will object to Senate 1’s decision, as the extent of the punishment with a hefty fine and a possible deduction of points represents an extremely harsh decision,” said the former Rapid captain.
The pyrotechnic scandal was the second serious incident after the escalations during the derby at Wiener Austria in March. “The escalation in the use of pyrotechnics and the associated immediate danger for everyone involved on site force Senate 1 to impose these sanctions. Since the second escalation level has already been reached at SK Rapid, this was according to the sanctions concept imposed by the Bundesliga clubs themselves to combine the unconditional fine with a conditional points deduction for the coming season,” the league explained.
Sturm only got away without a point penalty because it was the first such penalty.
