Camp Marisal: Empowering Young Girls in Benin through Basketball Training

The city of Igbo Idaasha of Benin (Dassa-Zoumè) can hope to make a big splash in the world of Beninese basketball in the years to come. This, thanks to the numerous camps that are organized in the locality, but especially to the one which had its first edition this year.

“Camp Marisal” since that is what it is about, brought together twenty (20) young girls aged 17 and under (U17). Held last August, the camp allowed the girls to learn the basics of playing basketball. On occasion, they acquired the fundamentals for marking the terrain of this sport, as well as the skills for making its nets. These are two training courses which will allow these young girls in the future to develop other activities around this sporting discipline. Which will actively participate in their empowerment in Beninese society. “Basically, the goal of this camp is to revive the flame of basketball in the Collines department, particularly in the town of Dassa-Zoumè which is my native land. The other vision is to give girls confidence in this discipline. In the future, through a team, they will be able to defend this city which would have given so much for them,” confided Mariam Salami, promoter of this training camp. Continuing, she explains that this initiative is part of the dynamic initiated by President Ismahinl Onifadé of the Beninese Basketball Federation (Fbbb), for the construction of a pool of young talents at the grassroots across the four corners of the country and to provide a good quality training forum. “Over the three days of training, the girls were diligent. They understood the dynamism implemented by President Onifadé to promote this sport in general and among young girls in particular. What is pleasing is that we plan to continue our efforts to effectively support the ambitions of the Federation,” appreciated the promoter. The camp ended with a 3×3 basketball tournament. The girls took advantage of the opportunity to demonstrate to the population and especially their parents, what they learned during “Camp Marisal”. And like Mariam Salami, they left the camp happy and with hands full of gifts bearing the “Marisal” brand.
