Lazio blow in Glasgow, 2-1 to Celtic in the 95th minute

Lazio were looking for victory against Celtic in the Champions League, and victory it was. The decisive goal came at the last gasp, in full injury time, and was scored by Pedro who completed the Biancocelesti’s comeback with a precise header. At Celtic Park in Glasgow it ends 2-1 for Lazio who wins their first European victory of the season. Sarri knew well that Brendan Rodgers’ team was a tough opponent. The first half was balanced but with few opportunities apart from the goals: Furuhashi gave the home team the lead, Vecino equalized following a corner kick, deflecting Romagnoli’s header. The second half was all in all balanced and only in injury time did Lazio find the winning shot. Sarri confirms the Felipe Anderson-Immobile-Zaccagni trident with Vecino in the control room. Lazzari and Hysaj full backs.

At Celtic. in place of the suspended Lagerbielke. Brendan Rdgers relies on Phillips while in the trident there is room for Yang with Maeda and Furuhashi. Complicated start for Lazio: the first minutes are a study but Celtic is more aggressive and after making themselves dangerous (10′) with Furuhashi they find the opening goal two minutes later with the Japanese: Maeda focuses from the lane and exchanges with O’Riley, who finds the path to first serve Furuhashi, inserted centrally between the Biancocelesti defenders: the Japanese appears in the area in front of Provedel and beats him with his right foot.

Lazio tries to reorganize their ideas and start again in search of a draw by raising the center of gravity but struggles to build. In the 25th minute Immobile becomes dangerous but his position is judged to be offside. Lazio’s equalizer came in the 29th minute at the end of a confusing move and was signed by Vecino: a melee in the area following the corner kick, Romagnoli headed it and Vecino, again with his header, headed into the net from a few steps away. Once parity has been restored, Celtic and Lazio play openly and the show benefits.

In the 37th minute the Scots were dangerous with O’Riley trying to surprise Provedel. In the second half we start again with the same formations as the first 45 minutes and with Lazio immediately aggressive but not very precise. Like in the 6th minute when Felipe Anderson served by Immobile at the end of a nice move was unable to finish. In the 13th minute, Celtic became dangerous following a free kick from the edge of the box after a foul by Kamada on Yang: a short shot for Hatate’s right-footed shot which involved Provedel, the action continued on the rebound and Johnston finished the shot to finish high. Celtic raises the pace, Lazio is careful in defence. In the 24th minute Kamada tries from distance but Hart is attentive and blocks it to the ground. In the 35th minute thrill for Lazio: Palma scores for Celtic but the goal is disallowed due to offside reported by VAR. Rodgers and Sarri start the substitutions: in place of Zaccagni the Tuscan coach sends Pedro onto the pitch who in full injury time , in the 50th minute he finds the goal that decides the match and gives the Biancocelesti the victory: Guendouzi’s cross for the Spaniard’s header which catches the goalkeeper at the counter time. And Lazio celebrates.

Milan wasteful, with Borussia Dortmund still 0-0

Milan, once again, does not go beyond a 0-0 draw in the Champions League and, once again, there is great regret. As against Newcastle, also against Borussia Dortmund in front of the ‘Yellow Wall’, Stefano Pioli’s team wastes a lot, too much in a circle of iron like the one in which the Rossoneri ended up. Because what enormously complicates Milan’s Champions League objectives is the result at the Parc des Princes with PSG surprisingly collapsing against Newcastle 4-1. Now the English are leading the table, then PSG with 3 points, followed by Milan with 2 and bringing up the rear is Borussia with 1, the one won against the Rossoneri.

Now Paris needs to do the feat, which perhaps – given tonight’s result – is not so impossible. Milan could have done more. Borussia Dortmund is not an irresistible team but the Rossoneri have often sinned in lucidity, they have committed too many frivolities, leaving space for the home team. The Rossoneri’s counterattacks have never been effective. Indeed, there were often portions of the race in which the pace dropped, the competitive spirit almost anesthetized. Pobega disappointed, Adli came on better in the second half. Giroud was also subdued as he made too many mistakes in front of goal.

Borussia’s chances, however, often arose from errors in the Rossoneri’s construction phase, after the half hour mark. First Malen comes close to the post, then Fullkrug engages Maignan who blocks without holding back. Calabria is struggling a lot, perhaps not at their best given that Pioli tries to ascertain his condition throughout the end of the first half. But right in the Rossoneri’s moment of suffering, a clear opportunity arrives for Milan but it doesn’t materialize because Giroud and Theo Hernandez hinder each other.

It’s a hard-fought, balanced match. Borussia puts Milan under pressure and once again Maignan takes care of Bensebaini’s volley. Then the Rossoneri took advantage of the spaces granted by the Germans with the speed of Leao who, after a full-range percussion, missed Giroud by a whisker and then Pobega had the shot blocked. Lots of mistakes in Milan, a midfield that doesn’t have an impact and suffers Borussia’s possession of the ball. The injury emergency cannot justify a performance that is far too opaque for a Champions League match. In the second half, after yet another wasted opportunity this time by Pulisic who kicked too centrally, Pioli recalled Pobega for Adli.

Milan keeps the ball more but is unable to make an impact. So the Rossoneri coach throws Okafor, Florenzi and Chukwueze into the mix. Changes expected by fans who did not appreciate the performance of the starting lineup. Chukwueze himself makes a sensational mistake from close range, in front of Kobel. Then Reijnders misses the shot. In the final the two teams frantically searched for the winning goal but the score did not go beyond 0-0. And Milan leaves the field with a bitter taste in their mouth, aware that with a little more precision they could have led the group standings. Instead, there are many regrets and now there is a double match against PSG on the calendar which cannot be missed.
