Chilean Tennis Players Shine in ATP Circuit, Achieving Career Bests and Rankings Rise

The main Chilean tennis players will have happy accounts after a new week of competition on the ATP circuit, this after this Monday’s update of the world ranking.

As has been customary during this season, Nicolás Jarry was the national racket that had the best performance after reaching the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters 1000.

In the Chinese competition, the penultimate of the year in that category, the “Prince” was free in the first round given his status as the top seed. He then successively accounted for the Frenchman Terence Atmane (148th), the Italian Lorenzo Sonego (59th) and the Argentine Diego Schwartzman (130th), falling in the phase of the eight best with the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (19th).

Despite the elimination, the man from Santiago achieved his first Masters 1000 quarter-final in his career in Shanghai and will rise one place in the rankings (from 22nd to 21st, his best historical position). His next challenge will be the ATP 500 in Basel, a championship that will be held between October 23 and 29.

For his part, Christian Garin left behind his elimination in the second round of the Chinese tournament at the hands of the Russian Daniil Medvedev (3rd), obtaining two victories in the qualifying of the ATP 500 in Tokyo.

“Gago” beat the Australians Philip Sekulic (298th) and his compatriot Rinky Hijikata (75th), entering the main draw of the competition. There, the Arican will face off this Monday with the Japanese Sho Shimabukuro (135°) for the first phase.

In any case, the triumphs achieved in Japanese territory will bring immediate benefits to Garin, who will rise four places in the ranking, from 98th to 94th place.

Meanwhile, Tomás Barrios wants to turn the page after his fall in the debut in the Buenos Aires Challenger against the Portuguese Gastao Elias (366°). The chillanejo – who will climb from 108th place to 107th place, the best of his career – will remain in Argentina to compete in the Santa Fe Challenger 2, where this Monday he will face the local Guido Andreozzi (211th).

Finally, Alejandro Tabilo – despite his setback in the trans-Andean capital, where he debuted with a fall against the Italian Franco Agamenone (203rd) – will also climb one place (120th to 119th). However, like Jarry, the Canadian-born will not have action this week.
