Chinese Jiu-Jitsu Team Makes Breakthrough at Hangzhou Asian Games with Two Gold Medals

On October 2, the Jiu-Jitsu event of the Hangzhou Asian Games concluded at the Linpu Gymnasium in Xiaoshan, Hangzhou. Liu Yi, a player from the Chinese Sports Delegation, won the women’s -87kg gold medal. After the game, she hugged and celebrated with her teammate Yu Dan, who won the championship the day before.

In this Asian Games, the Chinese Jiu-Jitsu team sent two female athletes to compete and won two gold medals with outstanding results. Yu Dan won the women’s -70kg championship, achieving a breakthrough for the Chinese team in the Asian Games Jiu-Jitsu event with zero gold medals.

Jiu-jitsu is an ancient form of upright uniform fighting that is popular in Central Asia. 24-year-old Yu Dan and 27-year-old Liu Yi were both judo athletes before and have achieved good results in competitions such as the 14th National Games in 2021. Due to technical transformation and repeated injuries, they experienced many difficulties during the preparation period, but the goal of striving to win the Hangzhou Asian Games inspired them to persist in training hard.

“In order to prepare for the Hangzhou Asian Games, in early 2022, the State Sports General Administration’s Wrestling and Jujitsu Center commissioned the Hebei Provincial Sports Bureau to formally form a national training team for Jiu-Jitsu, selecting talents from judo and Chinese wrestling.” Hebei Provincial Sports Bureau Wrestling and Boxing Chen Zhong, deputy director of the Taekwondo Sports Center, said that the training team adopts the model of “association leadership, social participation, and government support”, and the athletes are jointly trained by Hebei Province and Zhejiang Province.

Only by starting from scratch and racing against time to intensify training can we achieve catch-up. Chen Zhong said: “The team has formulated detailed training and competition plans, and also hired foreign coaches as technical guides to constantly improve technical movements.” At the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Championships in April this year, the team members participated in the Jiu-Jitsu competition for the first time. Earned 5 gold medals. This makes the team members very encouraged and full of expectations for their “debut” in the Asian Games.

During the Hangzhou Asian Games, Chen Zhong also had another identity – a domestic technical official. “I took this opportunity to actively communicate with the International Jiu-Jitsu Association and foreign experts. I hope there will be more Jiu-Jitsu events in the future so that more people can feel the charm of this sport.” Chen Zhong said.
