US Open champion Coco Gauff continued her winning streak in Beijing on Friday.
The American eliminated the Greek Maria Sakkari 6:2,6:4 in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament and has thus won her last 16 games on the tour.
This is the longest streak among women this year. The opponent in the semi-finals is the number two seeded Pole Iga Swiatek. However, world number one Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus was eliminated.
“It will be a tough match”
“It will be a tough match,” predicted Gauff, referring to Swiatek, against whom she has lost seven times in eight games so far.
The last duel in the semi-finals in Cincinnati went to the 19-year-old. Swiatek won in the quarterfinals against Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 6:7(8),7:6(5),6:1.
Rybakina bewzingt Sabalenka
Meanwhile, Sabalenka lost to Elena Rybakina 5:7,2:6. The Kazakh, who lost this year’s Australian Open final to Sabalenka, will face Russia’s Lyudmila Samsonova in the semi-finals on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, French Open finalist Karolina Muchova and Tunisian Ons Jabeur have qualified for the WTA Finals from October 29th to November 5th.
The trio booked the last tickets for the season-ending tournament in Cancun, Mexico, in which Sabalenka, Swiatek, Gauff, Rybakina and Jessica Pegula will also take part.
