Daniil Medvedev beats Stefanos Tsitsipas as a favorite with a score of 6-4 and 7-6(6) in 1 hour and 45 minutes to become the first finalist at ATP Vienna 2023. The Greek started with very clear ideas, but Medvedev counterattacked firmly.
The match did not start in the best way for Stefanos who committed a double fault, although he quickly encouraged himself to go up to the net point after point to get on the scoreboard for the first time. Safe on serve, Daniil tied the match without too many problems with exchanges from the back of the court. Aggressive at all times, Tsitsipas sent a clear message to the Russian. So clear was that message that Medvedev faced a double break option in the next game after making an error and a double fault.
TSITSIPAS LOSES THE COURSE
Medvedev’s solution was to climb the net, an alternative that momentarily took him away from danger. Stefanos had a new opportunity, but the Russian saved himself with one of his shots into the net and then made it 2-2 on the scoreboard. The Greek continued to press from the rest, although Daniil kept his distance. The points were lengthening and Tsitsipas seemed to run out of ideas, rushing with some poorly executed drop shots. He couldn’t at the first, but Medvedev got the first break at the second after 28 minutes of the match.
Stefanos served his serve and left the fate of the first set in the hands of his rival, with the score at 4-5. Tsitsipas brought out his best shots, such as an unanswered parallel forehand, which caused Daniil to get into a rush. With an impeccable serve, Medvedev won the first set of the semifinal in 39 minutes.
Blank, Stefanos started the second set wanting to fight for the match. With a passing pass, Daniil got dangerously close to Tsitsipas who was clinging to the duel. Equality dominated the semi-final, with the score at 3-3, until Tsitsipas accelerated to face a double break point. The Greek reacted with big volleys into the net to avoid a break. With the 5-4 in favor of Stefanos, Medvedev’s nose began to bleed at the end of the break, although that did not stop the Russian from later taking a valuable break point.
Stefanos relied on his inverted forehand to continue in the fight, securing the tiebreak, something that Daniil replicated with a scoreless game. Medvedev took the first advantage, remaining two points away from the winning serve, but he wanted to give it a little more excitement with a double fault. Tsitsipas did not give in at first, although then he failed from the back of the court. Finally, Medvedev confirmed his passage to the final of the ATP Vienna 2023 as a result of an error by the Greek.
