DFB Aims for More Transparency in VAR Decisions

VAR decisions are often the subject of discussion. The DFB now wants to create more transparency.

Back in March, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) announced at a meeting in London that the VAR decision-making process at FIFA tournaments would be shown live on the stadium screen and on television as a test. Now the DFB wants to follow suit – at least partially.

“There should be a VAR explanation format. What the specific form will be, where it will be accessed, as far as the rotation is concerned, cannot yet be said,” explained Alex Feuerherdt, media spokesman for DFB Schiri GmbH, on Thursday in response to a dpa request. The communication between referees and the video assistants should be partially made public. The DFB wants to create more transparency in controversial decisions in Bundesliga games. However, a start date has not yet been set.

Introduction in the current season?

“But we are in intensive discussions and planning and are confident that we can get it done this current season,” Feuerherdt continued. “It will be a format in which the radio will also be heard during certain game scenes.”

Announcements about VAR decisions in stadiums, such as those made at the Women’s World Cup in Australia or at the Club World Cup, are also conceivable in the Bundesliga. However, this requires approval from and general agreement from the highest rule makers in the IFAB.

We welcome everything that improves transparency for the people in the stadium.

“We don’t know whether FIFA will give approval, but it is certainly conceivable,” said Feuerherdt. “If such a possibility comes up, it is conceivable for us that we would participate.” According to the DFB, there were positive aspects to this approach at the Women’s World Cup, such as the increased transparency in the stadiums when making VAR decisions: “We like everything that improves transparency for the people in the stadium.”

The discussion about greater transparency in VAR decisions was once again sparked by a goal for Liverpool FC that was wrongly disallowed for offside in a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur two weeks ago. Jürgen Klopp called for a replay, the referee association PGMOL spoke of a “human error”.
